Cliches in Merchant of Venice

I am doing a paper of various cliches found in The Merchant of Venice (ex. "All that glisters is not gold" and "Love is blind"). I have a little information on them, but I am mainly interested in tracing the background of the cliches. In one source I read that Shakespeare observed that "All that glisters . . ." was an old proverb, but I haven't been able to find any other information about that cliche. If you have any information regarding what areas to search in and anything else, please let me know. Thank you.
