It's not that I think the text should be banned. It's just not the appropriate text to teach in High School. In California, the play was adopted because the language was easier to grasp than others of Shakespeare's plays. When it was taught, the anti-semitism was simply avoided, which is, I think akin to condoning it. To take on the anti-semitism is to neglect both that topic and Shakespeare. One cannot do justice to the issue of anti-semitism without bringing in other sources and examining it thorougly. If High School teachers are willing to do this, I would support the teaching of the Merchant. Unwilling, I think that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" (to quote A. Pope).
