Hamlet is trying to deal with all this stuff about his father
being murdered, his uncle being the murderer, his mother marrying
the murderer, ... And on top of that, the poor guy really doesn't
have any friends. The only reason Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
are there is because they were sent to spy on him. So we have
someone who is severely depressed, he sees only childhood friends
who he thinks have come to visit him, but then finds out they
weren't, and THEN, Ophelia (who I think he really did love b/c
of the grave scene) turns out to be spying on him too.
Sorry about the lengthy semi-incoherent reply. I think my point
was that Ophelia serves to be one more thing that has betrayed
him - one more thing that isn't as it seems. I think Hamlet
grew up in a very sheltered life, and never really had to worry
about whether or not he could trust this person or that person,
and suddenly, nothing is as it seems, and he has to somehow deal
with that loss of innocence.Posted by Smurfette on March 30, 1997 at 19:22:45
