Not a new question

You are, of course, asking the question that has stymied critics, actors and audiences for 400 years. General opinion leans vaguely toward the first; that is, the idea that the job was impossible to begin with is not broadly accepted. The problem then becomes "Pick your favorite tragic flaw." It may be more useful (and more realistic) to see Hamlet as complex, not simple: instead of thinking that one little thing brought him down, explore how the mix of vices and virtues in him paralyse him.
