I've heard two theories on the definition of tragedy with
respect to Hamlet. The first is that Hamlet's downfall is due to
a tragic flaw, namely his inability to act. The second is that
the play is a tragedy because all the cards are stacked against
him and there is no possible way for it to end other than in his
downfall. He is a hero in that he plays the game despite the
fact that there is no possible way for him to win and he knows it
and the audience knows it. Any opinions one way or the other?
