I've always favored the opinion that Hamlet is not possessed of any flaw, but that he is brought down by the circumstances. He is heroic in this. The play is a tragedy, in my mind, because everyone else in the play possesses their own flaws, and it is the interaction of these flaws which bring about the death of Hamlet. The grand-daddy of all these is, of course, Claudius' lust for the crown and for Gertrude -- a lust which will bring about every single death which follows.Posted by Justin Bacon on April 01, 1997 at 15:04:14
