Yeah, but...

No, neither Claudius, Hamlet, nor Laertes completely failed, because their goals were met, as you stated. Neither did either character completely succeed. However, I meant "succeed" in a broader sense than you are applying it here. Yes, they succeed in killing whom they want killed, but are slain in the process.

Perhaps it's just a function of my style of thinking. Half a victory, to my mind, is also half a defeat, and while all three men got what they wanted, they paid the ultimate price for it and didn't even live to see the fruits of their labors. That's not exactly a success story to my way of thinking... except possibly for Fortinbras. ;)
