It's always been that way.

Going all the way back to Greek theatre, woman were not allowed to be on stage. They were considered "worthy" just like they couldn't own land, vote or anything else. Interesting note*** Euripides,a Greek playwright, often questioned tradition values of theatre and would put female characters in major roles(Medea) but still couldn't have women on stage because of the rules for the contests.
