Can we venture away from the Bard without risking death here?

Thomas Heywood wrote an interesting ditty (around Shakespeare's
time) about relationships between husband and wife, sister
and brother, suitor and sought-after. Sound familiar? Like
Shakespeare, the treatment of women echoed what was going on
at the time -- rampant mysogyny. Now, I though that these men
were somehow enlightened, intellectually challenging the norms,
questioning what everyone took for granted everyday was
natural. Do I have reason to be disapponted here?
