Pennington

Michael Pennington played Hamlet in John Barton's 1980 production for the Royal Shakespeare Company. It was the best Hamlet I have ever seen; and Pennington's was the best (because the most intelligent) performance of the role in my experience. Pennington wrote an essay on his apprach to the part in the first volume of Players of Shakespeare (1985), still available at many bookstores. More recently, he wrote an entire book on the play entitled Hamlet: A User's Guide, also generally available.
