Carnival

I'm surprised to hear that any professor would dispute the
claim that carnival was a theme in 12N. Maybe the problem
is how you've articulated what carnival is?

I think that the contest between Toby and Malvolio is set
up as a farly conventional war between Carnival
and Lent (you could look at the Breugel painting of that
name and see lots of parallels) - though it gets more complex
since Malvolio - who is supposed to stand for restraint and
government in this pairing has riotious and transgressive
fantasies about his mistress and since Toby et al impose
physical restraint on M.
