Hamlet is an indecisive man who doesn't trust his own thoughts anymore. He needed proof to continue his mission to avenge his father's death. He needed Horatio to back him up in case his mind is playing tricks on him.
Hamlet is clueless. He doesn't know whether to believe in the ghost or not. He thinks that perhaps it is his mind that is thinking and seeing the spector. The test was to determine his course of action, and the test determined that Hamlet would kill Claudius.
