The reference is to the Feast of the Epiphany, 12 nights after Christmas, supposedly the day the Magi arrived. It was something of a midwinter festival night, the end of the Christmas season, and an occasion for partying. There are 2 theories: that the play was commissioned as entertainment for a Twelfth Night party, or that the title suggests a festive spirit, the way you might call a modern comedy "Christmas in July."Posted by Hamlet on April 15, 1997 at 08:39:52
