Hamlet's death inevitable?

Hamlet certainly had to die after he killed Polonius, because
justice had to be fulfilled and all evil had to be punished.

However, I am uncertain if his character lead him into this
tragedy from the beginning on. Was he doomed to die because
he was too entangled in his own brilliant thoughts? And if
not, when did this vicious circle start?

I'd greatly appreciate any comments and new ideas.
