I'm not sure I follow but...

There's too much there for me to be sure of all its
implications, but there's no reason to think that a
patron/client relationship would disallow any kind of
speculation about homoerotics. And age differences and
differences in power accompany many renaissance allusions
to such issues. That's one of the ways that renaissance
attitudes toward the meaning of male-male erotics are
unlike out own. We think of "gay" as a parallel alternative
to heterosexual: both orientations seek out seek out
relationships like marriage and/or dating. Many of the
interesting depictions of homoerotics in renaissance drama
see it as part of the patron/client relationship and so
not an alternative to heterosexual marriage.
